eControl Conversions

NA Jones is proud to offer our cutting‐edge eControl Series X Conversion service—a modern solution that transforms traditional Aga Cookers into efficient, digitally controlled appliances. Originally introduced in 2021 by a pioneering company during the energy crisis, the eControl system has quickly become popular thanks to its flexibility, precise control, and energy‐efficient operation.
The eControl system replaces the “always on” analogue approach with a dynamic, digitally managed platform. It can be integrated into one of our fully refurbished Aga Cookers or converted into your existing model. The system utilises strategically placed electric elements above and below the cast iron ovens, ensuring even heat distribution throughout.
The eControl Control Panel
- Uniform Heat Distribution: Electric elements work together to provide consistent and efficient cooking temperatures.
- Digital Precision: Each cast iron oven and hotplate is individually managed via dedicated temperature dials.
Key Components
Hotplates
- Independent Control: Both right-hand (RH) and left-hand (LH) hotplates are independently regulated, with sliding temperature scale dials that allow temperatures from room temperature up to 370°C.
- Safety & Efficiency: Hotplates must be switched off or set to ECO mode when not in use to prevent overheating and avoid out-of-warranty repairs.
Ovens
- Digital Temperature Displays: Each oven features a screen showing the target temperature along with a discreet green indicator (set behind frosted glass) to signal when the oven is ready.
- Hotcupboard Functionality: On our 4-oven models, the hotcupboard section (used for simmering or warming) is controlled via a simple ON/OFF button, with fixed temperature settings.
- Optional Ventilation: There is an option to connect an external fan to assist with oven ventilation extraction for optimal performance.
Temperature Specifications
For example, typical maximum temperatures include:
- Hotplates (RH & LH): Up to 370°C
- Ovens: Varies by position and model (e.g., Top RH Oven up to approximately 260–265°C, with lower ovens adjusted accordingly)
- Hot Cupboard Units: Fixed settings at 80°C and 120°C (on applicable models)
Detailed temperature configurations vary between models and are available in our user guides for 2 & 4 oven and 3 & 5 oven setups.
Model Compatibility
The eControl Series X Conversion is suitable for many popular Aga Cooker models, including:
- Traditional Standard Aga Cooker
- Pre-74 Deluxe Model
- Post-74 Deluxe Model
- Post-95 Deluxe Model
- Post-2000 Deluxe Model
- Limited edition models such as the Classic and Millennium editions
Element Setup & System Integration
The conversion process involves a complete re-engineering of the cooker’s heating elements:
- Hotplate Elements:
- RH Hotplate Element: 1500W
- LH Hotplate Element: 2000W
- Oven Elements:
- Top Oven Element: 1000W
- Middle Oven Element: 750W
- Bottom Oven Element: 750W
- Additional Options:
- For 3-oven models, LH Top and Bottom elements are 750W each.
- On 4-oven models, a dedicated Hotcupboard Element (750W) is included.
- The optional eControl Ceramic InstaHeat Hotplate (2500W) is engineered specifically to replace the RH hotplate, enhancing heat-up times and efficiency.
During the conversion, traditional cast iron conduits, convection ducts, burner pits, cast barrels, and heavy hotplates are removed. The original ovens are slightly modified to accommodate new thermostats and venting, and a modern insulation blanket is added around the ovens to reduce heat loss and lower energy bills.
Advantages
- Innovative & Evolving: Continuous system improvements ensure you benefit from the latest technology.
- Aesthetic Appeal: A sleek glass control panel offers modern visual appeal.
- Precision Cooking: Individually controlled hotplates and ovens mimic the heat distribution of traditional models.
- Energy Efficiency: ECO mode and enhanced insulation reduce energy consumption.
- Flexibility: Options include third-party ON/OFF timers, external ventilation fans, and an InstaHeat ceramic hob upgrade.
For those seeking an alternative, our popular ElectricKit Conversion system remains a reliable option.
Electrical Requirements
Proper installation is critical. The electric connection must be located directly adjacent to the cooker:
- 2-Oven System: Requires a 32amp supply.
- 3-Oven System: Requires a 40amp supply.
- 4-Oven System: Requires a 32amp supply.
- InstaHeat Upgrade: Upgrading to the InstaHeat hob will necessitate a 40amp supply.
Running Costs
Running costs vary based on usage and settings. For example, with a tariff of approximately 0.24p per kW:
- Top Oven at 180°C: Operated 12 hours daily, costs roughly £0.64 per day (about £4.34 per week).
- Hotplate at Simmering Temperature: Operated 12 hours daily, costs approximately £1.12 per day (about £7.86 per week).
Switching to a ceramic hob upgrade for the RH hotplate can further reduce costs. For frequent on/off cycling, maintaining a consistent ‘slumber’ temperature (around 180°C) in the roasting oven is recommended for efficiency.
Venting Options
eControl Converted cookers are generally designed for room venting, offering versatile placement in your kitchen. A small vented shroud is discreetly positioned behind the top plate between the lids, with a hidden 28mm copper pipe that directs hot air from the ovens into the room. If you prefer an external oven fan, it can be connected directly to the control panel—simply specify your requirements when ordering.
Heat-Up Times Have Been Improved
One of the major benefits of eControl Conversion is energy efficiency—unlike the traditional always-on cooker, you can power up only the elements you need. However, preheat times are important to note:
Top Right-Hand Oven:
- Roasting (220°C): Approximately 62 minutes (from cold), including a 20-minute stabilisation period (from ECO mode).
- Baking (180°C): Approximately 44 minutes (from cold).
Hotplates:
- Simmering: Roughly 10 minutes from cold.
- Boiling: Approximately 15 minutes from cold.
For optimal performance, we recommend using the RH hotplate, which may already benefit from residual heat if the ovens are active. Reducing hotplate usage—or upgrading to a ceramic/induction hob—can also improve energy efficiency.
